Whisky Marmalade takes 3rd place in Wolverhampton claiming race
After no runners in the early part of July Ben sends Whisky Marmalade to Wolverhampton on 13th July to contest a claiming race over a mile and a half. Whisky Marmalade, who joined Ben in early June from David O’Meara, is owned by Middleham Park Racing and is ridden today by Cam Hardie a 3 lb claiming apprentice attached to Richard Hannon’s stable and who is having his first ride for Ben. Cam has Whisky Marmalade nicely positioned on the heels of the leaders for much of the race but the 3 year old can find no extra in the final furlong and has to settle for 3rd place.
Although this is the third occasion Whisky Marmalade has finished 3rd on the Flat she is still a maiden. On her debut for Ben in the middle of June she unseated her rider at the third in her first Juvenile Hurdle at Market Rasen but Ben may return the filly to that sphere for her next run.
Camanche Grey records 2nd career win in taking Selling race at Thirsk
The following day Ben takes Camanche Grey to Thirsk for a Selling race over 5 furlongs. Graham Lee, successful on the 4 year old 12 months ago at Warwick, is reunited with Camanche Grey and holds the grey up towards the rear of the 5 runners for much of the race until asking for an effort on the outside inside the last 2 furlongs. It isn’t until the furlong marker that Graham drives Camanche Grey up on the outside of the leaders and under a typically strong drive from this fine jockey Camanche Grey gets his head in front in the final 100 yards to eventually win a shade cosily by half a length. Camanche Grey is owned by Lee Ashmore and is retained without a bid.
Graham Lee achieves win No 2 of the week for Ben as Shesnotforturning deservedly loses her maiden tag
The week is turning into a hugely successful one for Ben and a further 2 days later, on July 16th, he takes 2 horses to Hamilton Park. These include Shesnotforturning who has been such a revelation since returning to the track after an absence of over 18 months and who runs in a 6 furlong maiden race, following 2nd, 3rd and 2nd again places in her 3 runs in 2015. Graham Lee, successful on Camanche Grey 2 days earlier, takes the ride and has the 5 year old in front from leaving the stalls and makes every yard of the running. In a determined though hands and heels ride Graham has no intention of surrendering the lead at any time of the race and inside the final furlong Shesnotforturning begins to draw right away from the rest of the field and after being eased down in the final 100 yards is still 3 and a half lengths clear at the line.
This is another fine ride from Graham Lee and a deserved first win for Shesnotforturning whose confidence will surely have benefitted from this first success. This is also a deserving win for Christine Barclay in whose colours the mare runs, whilst for Ben it is the 8th win of his training career at Hamilton making it currently his most successful course in terms of winners.
